  1. Collect all the necessary tools. For example: carbine grout saw, hammer, chisel, nail set, putty knife, thin set mortar, notched trowels, rubber hammer, screw driver, new (slate or other) tiles, grout, thin set premix, tile spacer, and tile and grout sealant.
  2. Get started with removing old tile grout with the help of old grout saw.
  3. Break the tile with a hammer, nail, and chisel. Remove all the existing tiles one by one.
  4. Scrape the old thin set mortar.
  5. Remove all the dust and debris from the area. Use vacuum cleaner to make it easier.
  6. Check the position of the subfloor beneath. Fix it as and if required. Let the new adjustments settle before moving to the next step.
  7. Mix thin set mortar following the manufacturer’s instruction.
  8. Evenly apply thin set on the subfloor and create ridges using a notched edge trowel. Apply it enough so it covers one slate tile.
  9. Use spacers between tiles, and complete the installation.
  10. Let the mortar set for the recommended duration before cleaning and grouting the tile.
