Tips for Tiling on Floor Boards


 

If you are using plywood or other kind of backer board, then tiling on floor boards is possible. This article offers useful tips for working with floor board during your tile project –

Securing the Floor Board First –

First thing first! Before you place an underlayment or subfloor, you will need to secure the floor board. Identify screeching floor boards, and screw or nail them tightly on joists. This will help you create a solid and stable base to get started. Watch for plumbing pipes and wires while doing so.

Choosing the Backer Board –

Once you have secured the backer board for tile installation. There are plenty of options available for that. The most common ones are: cement backer board and plywood backer board. You can get them at a nearby DIY store.

Pro Tip: when buying plywood backer board, make sure that the thickness of the board is 12 mm or more. This will add to the robustness and durability of the installation.

Securing the Backer Board -

Once you have the backer board, it is time to secure it as well. Work on the board(s) one by one. Make sure the boards are tightly secured on the floor board. Joints should also be secured with tape, glue, and nails.

Applying Tile Primer –

Before you begin tile installation on backer board, it is required that you apply a layer (or two) of a tiling primer. This helps ensure a better grip between substrate and tiles.

Let the primer dry and cure before getting started.

Installing Tiles –

Now you are ready to tile, the process of which is same as other tile projects.
