Luxury Vinyl Tile or Standard Vinyl Tile – Which One is Better?

Vinyl is not a new term in the construction industry. It has been here since early 1970s. And since then, it has gone through significant upgrades that have made it the most popular flooring material in the year 2022.

But when you are searching vinyl flooring options, you often stumble upon two different materials – luxury vinyl tile and sheet or standard vinyl tile. Both are labeled vinyl, and this is surely a confusion for many homeowners.

So, we decided to do a side-by-side comparison between luxury vinyl tile and standard vinyl tile to help buy the right material for your project within your budget. Check out the following subsections and pointers –

Old Vs New -

Standard vinyl tiles were a revolutionary product then. But today, we have luxury vinyl tiles, an advanced and more durable version of standard vinyl tiles.

Price –

Standard vinyl tiles are cheaper than LVTs. The price of SVTs ranges somewhere between $0.50 and $2.00. And the price range of luxury vinyl tiles is $2.00 to $5 per square foot.

So, if you have a really tight budget, then standard vinyl tiles or vinyl sheet tiles would be a great option for you.

Installation –

Both LVT and SVT are easy to install flooring options. They are a DIY-friendly material; however, if you are unaware of the know-how to tile installation, it would be wise to hire a tiler to get the job done.

Manufacturing –

Both LVT and SVT are composed on multiple layers of different materials. Technically, luxury vinyl and standard vinyl are made from same material – polyvinyl chloride, which in simpler terms is called PVC or plastic.

The top layer in both the tiles are clear and transparent. This layer is added to the tile to enhance its shine, water resistance, and stain resistance.

The bottom layer is harder in LVT than in SVT.

Looks –

Vinyl flooring has now become synonymous with wood effect or wood imitation. Both LVT and SVT are wood-effect flooring options. However, they can be available in other looks as well, such as stone look and metal look.

Vinyl tiles can be available in solid colors too.

Performance wise, luxury vinyl tiles are more durable than standard vinyl tiles. If you receive heavy foot traffic in your living area, you should prefer LVT flooring.

Hopefully, by now, you would have figured which material would be better for your budget and needs.
